Interview with Tui from POP magazine

2 Apr

This time last week, Elle and I were lucky enough to grab an interview with Tui, who is the junior fashion editor at POP magazine.

We made our way down to the POP magazine headquarters, which is situated just around the corner from Regent Street, on a beautiful Friday afternoon.

As soon as we walked into the plush building, myself and Elle looked at each other as if to say “WOW, I can’t believe we’re actually here!” Once we had signed in with the receptionist, we headed for the lift and made our way to the third floor of the building, where we waited outside the offices to meet Tui.

After about 10 minutes of waiting nervously, she finally appeared from the office with a big smile on her face. We shook hands, introduced ourselves, and made our way back outside the offices to sit in the park which is located just outside the offices on Hanover Square.

We set up our audio equipment, and jumped right into the interview. She was such a pleasure to chat to, and she really was an inspiration to both of us. She spoke about fashion in a completely different way to what we first imagined. Instead of relating fashion to the whole designer catwalk scene, she told us that fashion should relate to your own personality rather than copying everyone else’s style. And we couldn’t agree more! She’s made us look at the fashion industry in a completely different light.

We managed to ask her a whole range of questions relating to her role in the magazine and her opinions on fashion.

Make sure you check this interview out…  I’m sure it will give you a huge insight into what the magazine is about and Tui’s view on the fashion industry!

UK fashion blogs: the new way to find your fashion advice

2 Apr

As most of us are aware, the internet is helping to take over almost every industry in the world. There are so many websites out there, and you can find pretty much everything you need through a a good ol’ Google search and the click of a mouse! The same is happening for the fashion industry. Gone are the days when we had to raid the shops for the perfect outfit for your night out, as you can normally find everything you need on the stores website.

Nowadays, you don’t have to research the shops and the fashion world for the latest trends. This is thanks to a little thing we call “fashion blogs” (just like this one!). There are so many of them out there, and they all focus on a different aspect within the fashion world.

So for today, I’m going to pick out a couple of my fave fashion blogs that are based in the UK, so that you can head over to their website and check them out for some more fashion tips!

Okay, so one of my favourite fashion blogs would have to be London’s Style Bubble. This blog is written by a young lady who called herself Susie Bubble. She is a British born Chinese and lives in the UK. On her blog, she claims that her interest in fashion developed when she was at school as a way to rebel against her parents and the ‘popular’ people at school. As she grew older, her interest started to develop and it is now her “number one passion.”

The reason that I love Style Bubble so much is because it covers all different areas of the fashion  world. The obvious choices to write about are the clothes, but she also looks at the artwork in books,  films, and also the history of fashion. She also updates the blog every day, which is very important on the internet as we want to be up to date with what is going on right now. The design of the blog is very neat, as you can easily navigate through each page and find exactly what you are looking for. Her blog is also very visual, as she uses lots of pictures to illustrate exactly what she is talking about. This is perfect for a fashion blog, as we need to see the styles that are used in clothing to see whether it appeals to us or not. Susie has also put together her own Style Bubble shop map, where she has pin pointed all of her favourite shops in London for you to check out!

Make sure you check out this blog… Susie puts so much time and detail into her writing, it’s definitely worth a read. I’m pretty sure you will be able to find anything on here to cater for your fashion needs!

Another favourite blog of mine would be Face Hunter. The motive of this blog is quite simple. Yvan Rodic, who also has a weekly column in The Guardian, sets out style scouts located all over the world to snap up photographs of people in the streets to see what they are wearing.

The reason I love this blog so much is just because of the simplicity of it. It doesn’t go into huge essays about fashion, and what everyone should be wearing. It focuses on one of the simple areas in the fashion areas – what everyone on the streets are wearing. Snapsnots include so many different types of people and style of clothing – you are bound to come across an outfit that you will fall in love with to add some inspiration to your wardrobe from normal people on the streets.  Again, just like Style Bubble, the blog is updates reguarly so there will always be some new images for you to gawp at as soon as you log on. Just like the blog, the layout is simple too. It doesn’t include too many links on the website, but you can navigate around simply and smoothly. The blog is supported by The Face Hunter Show, which supports a range of different video clips so you can visualize their street style hunt. This helps you to visualize the locations that they are hunting for street style in, and how different locations may affect different styles of the streets. This is a perfect example to show how blogs are becoming so popular, as they are available to converge all different types of media rather than just sticking to images and text that would be printed in a magazine.

Go and have a scroll through Face Hunter for yourself… You may even spot a gorgeous outfit being modeled by someone in a city near you!

Another blog that I like to keep up to date with is Go Fug Yourself. I discovered this blog in one of my Multimedia Journalism lessons, and now I can’t stop reading it. This blog was set up back in 2004 by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. The aim of this blog stands out more than any other in my own opinion. These two lovely ladies update their blog everyday with mocks of celebrity’s not so great efforts on the red carpet (hence their name. Fug is and abbreviation for Fugly, which means ‘fucking ugly’).  Although this is probably not the nicest way to approach the fashion world, it is great fun to read. In the media these days, we are constantly being reminded that certain celebrities are always looking their best and we should strive like them. With this blog, it reminds us that not even the rich and famous pick out the right outfits for an event!

I love the layout of this site. You can connect with the site through social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter so you can grab all the latest news without having the check the blog constantly. The posts are short and sweet, with images to show the celebrity style and a blunt comment on why it doesn’t work for them. I would say it’s quite a niche blog, as it focuses on celebrity fashion and gossip. One particular post that caught my eye on Thursday afternoon commented on Milla Jovovich’s outfit that she sported on the red carpet. Looking at the first picture, Jessica has simply ridiculed the pose that Milla is doing within the picture, referring to them as ‘finger guns.’ Yes, she does look like an idiot. Scrolling further down the page, the last image shows a little ‘mishap’ with her outfit. Yep. Milla’s nipple is on FULL view. After Jessica talks about the style of the dress “has A LOT happening” in the post, she refers to the last image with “…and then, speaking of “a lot is happening at the top of this dress,” this was brought to my attention”. It had me in stitches. I think it’s great that these two girls are not afraid to give their own opinions on celebrity style.

Jessica and Heather have even published their own book entitled “The Fug Awards”, which is available at Amazon. The girls made their own awards for celebrities with the worst styles on the red carpet. Personally, I haven’t had the chance to grab this book yet. But if it’s as funny as their blog, I’m sure it will be a sensational read. Plus it will make us feel a little bit better about ourselves!

So there you have it. Just a select few of my favourite fashion blogs out there. Make sure you get Googling to see if you can find any more decent blogs, and let us know if you come across any others that are worth reading!

Debenhams – The perfect department store!

31 Mar

Debenhams is one of the biggest clothing department stores within the UK. You can find pretty much everything you need there, thanks to its wide selection of brands that are available. However, they don’t just stick to selling women’s/menswear. They also sell home furniture to give that added sparkle to your home, essential electricals such as iPods, laptops (even electricals for the home such as a kettle!), and gifts to treat your loved ones with.

In Harrow, we are lucky enough to have our own MASSIVE Debenhams situated in the town centre. It includes departments such as Dorothy Perkins,  Jasper Conran, OasisWarehouse and our personal favourite high street store… Topshop of course!

With such a huge variety of items and departments to choose from at Debenhams, its hard to pick out all the top buys. But, look no further! Just sit back, relax, and I shall try my best to pick out some great buys that are available from this amazing store!

The first item I have picked out is from Debenhams own brand, Red Herring. This vintage style tea dress is a must have for your summer wardrobe. Its adorable floral design will definitely make you stand out from the crowd. With ruffled sleeves, they give off the perfect feminine vibe, which is perfect for this season. As most of us know, floral designs were very popular last summer, and they are going to stick around for this season too! Pair this dress up with some red accessories, and it’s guaranteed that you will catch a lot of eyes!

Grab this little number for only £38!

A girl can never have too many shoes, right? Absolutely correct! These stunning toepost sandals from Oasis are a perfect pair for this seasons BOLD colours (as mentioned in my previous post on bags). Again, the ruffle front of the shoe helps to give off that feminine look, which is perfect for all of us girly girls out there! Electric blue is going to be a BIG colour this season, so if you’re not confident enough to buy a pair of bright blue trousers, these little beauties are the perfect alternative.

Show off them newly painted toenails in style for only £30!

This next item is more casual, but is equally as popular! This dark peach front knot t-shirt is from the H! By Henry Holland collection. Throw this on for an urban look, thanks to the extremely cute knotted front. The cropped design also helps to give that chic look that will be ‘oh so popular’ this season. The peachy colour is one of my favourites. It will look perfect with that summer glow of yours, and is one of the colours that will be in this season. Pair this shirt with a pair of denim shorts for the ultimate summer chic look!

You can’t NOT get this shirt, as it will only cost you £10!

Our wardrobes definitely wouldn’t be complete without a little black dress, whatever season! This black mesh detail dress, designed by Star by Julien Macdonald, gives off that popular vintage vibe whilst sticking with the original ‘little black dress’ idea. The mesh detail at the top of the garment makes the dress look very sophisticated, and is perfect for making yourself look all glam for that evening out. The belted waist also helps to show off your curves- the perfect feminine figure!

So glam up your wardrobe for only £27.50… Thank you sales!

Hurrah! More florals! But this time, on a jumpsuit! This black poppy print jumpsuit is available from H! By Henry and Holland. Jumpsuits are inspired by the 70’s revival, so they will definitely be making their mark this season. This jumpsuit has been perfectly matched with the multi coloured floral pattern to bring out the feminine side in you. Perfect for a beautiful summers day, or evening! If you don’t feel that you are confident enough to wear a jumpsuit, there is a matching poppy print fifties dress, which is equally as stunning!

Jump into this outfit for £35!

Thanks to the popularity of the 90’s revival, denim is making its way back this season with a bang! For the ultimate casual day look, why not grab these white denim shorts? Designed by H! By Henry Holland, these shorts are perfect to team up with any bright t-shirt… whether it is cropped or oversized! Neutral colours look great when they are paired up with brights, and this will give off the ultimate chic/urban look that everyone is craving this season!

Show off your pins in style for a measly £22!

So there you have it. A range of different items and different designers, all available at one store. Make sure that you pop down to your local Debenhams this summer, or visit their website to see if you can spot any bargains for yourself!

BAGS Galore

24 Mar

Not quite sure what accessories you need to finish off the look of your new outfit?

Well, look no further. All you need is a cute summer handbag!

Bags are THE most important item this season. They are a very popular item with most women, as they can quickly make a simple outfit stand out. If you’re not confident with some of the new trends that are out this season, then don’t panic. Take a look at the following suggestions for handbags this summer, and you will be able to give off a trendy look without having to wear an outfit you’re not quite sure about.

Oversized bags.

Statements are really important this season. So what could be better than an oversized bag?

But why do we love them so much? Well, these are big bags (hence the name ‘OVERSIZED’), so it means that we can fit all of our stuff in them. I mean, c’mon, us women have a LOT of our own essentials. With a big bag, you don’t have the worry of cramming everything into a tiny little space. You can carry around everything you need with no worries!

If you’re feeling adventurous, choose a bag with an exotic print to make you stand out from the crowd. They help to give that extra ‘WOW’ factor to any plain looking outfit. However, make sure you match the prints accordingly… You don’t want to end up looking like your nan’s old curtains!

Colours.

This season, you will be witnessing a lot of bright colours. If you really want to get noticed (in a good way of course!), pick a bright coloured bag. This is a great tip if you’re not confident with buying a bright item of clothing. Block colours are going to be very popular. If you don’t want to buy those neon trousers just for the sake of looking fashionable, then just grab a neon bag instead!

Again, making a statement is really important this summer, and a bright coloured bag can help you do just that. As must of us know, 70’s revival is going to be huge this summer, and this is exactly what bright coloured bags are inspired by.

Electric blue and bright orange are going to be massive colours for this particular season. And any other neon colours. But you can splash out with whatever colour you like… Pink, Orange, Green, Yellow… You name it, there will probably be a bag for it! Again, just make sure you match the colours accordingly. Looking like someone has just thrown random paint colours at you is NOT a good look.

Clutch bags.

Even though big bags are in this summer, clutches are equally important. They are the perfect accessory for your summer party wear! Lets face it, you don’t want to be lugging around a huge bag all night. Personally, I think clutch bags are one of the cutest styles around. As well as looking cute, they’re just about big enough to fit in all your party essentials!

Frills and tassels seem to be making a big impact on clutch bags this summer, as well as all of our bright colours and patterned prints. The envelope bag is a popular style this season, and they come in a range of colours and styles. Animal print is going to be making its way back into the fashion world this summer, so you could grab a leopard print clutch bag to help bring out the ‘animal’ in you at night. So, go out there, grab yourself a pretty little clutch bag and get your dancing shoes on!

Shoulder/body bags.

These little numbers are another item that has been inspired by 70’s revival. The great thing about shoulder bags is that they look great in the day time, AND in the evening. It’s quite obvious from the name what these bags were made for… You wear them on your shoulders to help free up your hands. For example, wearing a shoulder bag when out on a long shopping trip means that you will have an extra bag to carry your shopping back. Result!

You can’t really go wrong with a shoulder or body bag – there are so many different styles out there that will suit everyone. They also come in different shapes and sizes. An oversized shoulder bag will probably be better for the day time, as it means that you can fit all of your essentials in one bag. Think back to this seasons idea of making a statement. With an oversized shoulder bag, you can do just that, as well as making it comfy to carry. However, elegant body bags are probably best with evening wear. Unlike clutches, you don’t have to constantly carry it in your hand for the whole night. Just sling it over your shoulder and voila! You can now party in comfort!

Fearne Cotton’s new Spring/Summer Collection at Very.co.uk is launched

21 Mar

Last week, Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton celebrated the launch of her new clothing range at online store Very.

Fearne has decided to go 60’s chick in her new clothing range, and the collection includes a range of vintage style dressed to help suit most peoples style. And plus, most of the outfits are easily affordable for us students!

At the launch of the Spring/Summer collection, she wore this mod style Peter Pan collar silk dress, teamed up with orange platform heels. Graduated cream and orange help to give off that perfect dreamy summer vibe that everyone will be wearing this season. The orange colour on the shoes match this dress perfectly and it really helps to finish off the whole look. This has to be one of the cutest outfits in her collection, and she works it perfectly with cute ringlets.

This dip dye Vintage silk dress costs £55, and a pair of these orange platforms cost £38. Be sure to add them to your wishlist!

Another one of my favourite items from Fearne’s new collection are these black and white wedge sandals. These little numbers have summer written all over them! They also give off that 60’s feel that Fearne has been aiming for with her collection, which will be uber stylish as soon as summer approaches us. And because these shoes are in black and white, you will be able to pair them up with almost any other outfit.

These little beauties will cost you £38 to buy. Perfect to show off your summer tanned legs with!

And finally, this black lace T-shirt is a must have for every girls summer wardrobe. Lace was a popular style last year, and it looks like it will be very much in trend this summer. Team this t-shirt with a cream colour for a very sophisticated look. Fearne is shown wearing this with a cream polka dot pleated skirt that helps to complete the look and give off that natural girly vibe, and will look perfect with a summer tan!

Purchase it for your own for only £35. Complete the look with Fearne’s pleated skirt, which will cost you £25.

If none of these items have managed to catch your interest, make sure you visit the website and check out the collection for yourself. She has such a wide range of clothes that are bound appeal to all girly fashionistas!
